Silica Rapids is a spectacular walking trail located in Whakapapa Village area of Tongariro National Park in Central North Island. It provides an excellent opportunity to explore a range of vegetation types and see the beautiful creamy-white Silica Rapid terraces. The 7 km loop takes around 2 hr 30 min, with an easy walking track suitable for most fitness levels. As you make your way through the beech forest, you can see the gold-toned bed of the bubbling stream. Further along, you can experience an amazing variety of alpine herbs and alpine flowers such as mountain daisies, harebells, and ourisia, all around the boardwalks across swamps. At the Punaruku Falls, enjoy the sight of Tawhainui Stream tumbling over the edge of an ancient lava flow. Finally, dont forget to stop by the famous Silica Rapids where you witness the unique aluminium and silicate mineral deposits on the streambed. So, if you're looking for a breathtaking adventure, grab your hiking boots and head off to this remarkable trail!
