Message from Where The Kids Roam

Before you dive into Nikko's temple extravaganza, you'll meet the guy who started it all - Shodo Shonin, immortalized in bronze right at the entrance. This wasn't just any monk; we're talking about the original Nikko pioneer who looked at these sacred mountains back in the 8th century and thought, "Yep, this is the spot."

The statue makes for a perfect "you are here" moment - after all, if this guy hadn't braved the wilderness and climbed Mount Nantai way back in the Heian era, none of Nikko's amazing temples would even exist. He's basically Nikko's founding father, and his statue feels like he's still welcoming visitors to the sacred spots he discovered.
