This is a true hidden gem for those seeking a peaceful retreat in Japan. I’ve visited this charming island twice and thoroughly enjoyed each trip. The easiest and most convenient way to get there is by booking a hotel, as many accommodations offer complimentary pick-up services from either Ugata Station or the nearby ferry port. This makes the journey seamless, allowing you to dive into relaxation mode the moment you arrive.

For day-trippers, the island is easily accessible by ferry, which runs frequently throughout the day. This makes it perfect for short getaways, allowing you to explore the island at your own pace.

Once you’ve arrived, Watakano offers a wide range of activities. You can relax on the beach, go sea kayaking, try out water biking, or rent a bicycle to explore the island’s scenic trails. If you prefer a more leisurely experience, hiking to one of the island’s viewpoints offers breathtaking ocean views. Fishing is another popular pastime here, making the island ideal for outdoor lovers.

For a romantic twist, Watakano Island is rich in history and has long been considered a peaceful escape for couples. With its serene beaches, intimate viewpoints, and charming atmosphere, it remains a romantic getaway destination even today.

Access:

  • If you’re staying on the island, ask your hotel for a shuttle bus from Ugata Station.

  • For those driving, you can park at the Watakano ferry port and take the ferry to the island.
