Dove Lake is one of the most iconic spots in all of Tasmania, and it’s easy to see why. Nestled in Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, it’s a picture-perfect spot that’s simply breathtaking. While you can definitely just stop by to soak in its beauty, I believe the best way to truly experience the area is by tackling the Dove Lake Circuit. This 6-kilometer track takes you all the way around the lake and offers some of the most stunning scenery in the region.

I recommend doing the walk clockwise, as it allows you to fully appreciate the views as they unfold. The track takes you beneath the towering spires of Cradle Mountain and its surrounding peaks, and you’ll find yourself passing alongside the serene waters of Dove Lake. Along the way, you’ll hike through stretches of lush rainforest that add a magical touch to the journey. There are several spots along the trail where you can walk right down to the lake’s edge. On a hot day, if you’re feeling brave, you might even take a dip, though personally, I opted out as the water was a bit too chilly for my taste. I did, however, see a few adventurous souls who didn’t mind the cold!

One of the highlights of the circuit is passing the iconic Dove Lake Boatshed. This charming structure offers incredible views with the lake and Cradle Mountain as a stunning backdrop. It’s a fantastic spot for photos and a perfect place to pause and take it all in. Overall, the Dove Lake Circuit provides an immersive experience of one of Tasmania’s most famous natural landmarks. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for a scenic walk, this trail is a must-do for anyone visiting the area.
