Lake Braies is now unanimously considered the most beautiful lake in the Dolomites. Its emerald green waters and unspoiled nature surrounding it make it a heavenly place that attracts tourists from all over the world. I remember the days where I rocked up to the lake with my camera and had little to no people around me. Lake Braies is easily reached, but due to overtourism, many restrictions have been imposed in recent years during peak season. On the other hand, it is such a special place that it should be preserved as much as possible from the large masses of tourists. These days the lake is jam packed, even at sunrise you will find yourself amongst other early bird photographers. However, I think everyone who visits the Dolomites has to see this iconic location. There is good reason why it has gained so much popularity and riding the boats on the lake is actually a lot of fun!
Please note: From July 10th 2022 until 10th of September the road to Lago di Braies is closed to traffic from 9:30am until 4pm. There are a few parking lots, some are closer some a bit further away. I would recommend going before the road closure so you can simply park next to the lake. If you visit during the day, you can also take a shuttle from the parking lot that will drop you off at the lake.
