Bring an open mind to MONA (Museum of Old and New Art), Australia’s largest privately funded museum. Founded by entrepreneur David Walsh in 2011, the museum features a wide variety of modern and contemporary art, as well as ancient artifacts from around the world.
If you have the cash, then taking the museum’s high speed catamaran across from Hobart’s Brooke Street Pier is well worthwhile. Some of the exhibits we loved included Bit.fall by German artist, Julius Popp, a waterfall of water drops that form words randomly sourced from Google searches and the Cloaca Machine by Wim Delvoye which mimics the actions of the human digestive system (it’s fed veggies in the morning and ‘poos’ on cue every afternoon). Yes, you read that right.
Be sure to book your museum entry in advance! This place is one you won't forget anytime soon.
