Built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian and once standing as the tallest building in Rome, Castel Sant’Angelo is an impressive fortress still standing today. Once a mausoleum for Hadrian and his family, the popes later used it as a prison and stronghold before turning it into a museum. Visitors of the castle can take in the breathtaking views from the top of the tower and explore the legend of the archangel Michael appearing during a devastating plague to bring peace. The museum also houses artwork by the likes of Raffaello da Montelupo and Peter Anton von Verschaffelt, making Castel Sant’Angelo a must-see experience in Rome!
