The North Head Trail at Signal Hill is one of my favorite hikes in St. John’s. Every time I tackle this trail, I’m struck by the rugged beauty and the sweeping views it offers from start to finish.
Starting from the base of Signal Hill, the trail takes you around the head of the harbor. As you navigate the steep 500 steps down to the Battery, the path curves along the coastline, revealing stunning vistas of the Atlantic Ocean at every turn. Reaching the Battery, with its row of colorful houses nestled against the rocky shore, feels like stepping into a postcard. It’s a view that never fails to impress, no matter how many times I see it.
For an extra challenge, I sometimes start from the Battery and make my way up. It’s a tough climb, but reaching the top near Cabot Tower and looking out over St. John’s Narrows and Fort Amherst makes every step worth it. The sense of accomplishment paired with those incredible views is why I keep coming back.
