Kolmanskop has an incredible and colorful history. This Namibian ghost town, formerly a diamond mining site, became a luxury oasis in the middle of the desert in the early-20th century. It was a hotbed for European opera groups, wealthy Europeans, and local tribespeople laboring away at the mines, accompanied by the antics of a pet ostrich that terrorized the town. The town saw its heyday come to an end after new diamond fields were discovered in the south and everyone left, leaving sand-filled buildings, peeling walls, and abandoned homes. Today, small tours visit this surreal landscape, filled with mystery, nostalgia, and historical intrigue. Kolmanskop is a reminder of the power of nature, the legacy of colonialism, and time's all-encompassing march.
