The Spitzkoppe, or the 'Matterhorn of Namibia', is an impressive group of granite peaks located between Usakos and Swakopmund in the Namib desert. Rising to a height of 5669 ft, these steep-sided inselbergs stand in stark contrast to the flat surrounding plains. This stunning geological formation has attracted many tourists and adventurers alike over the years; it's renowned for its Bushmen artwork engravings and was even featured as the filming location for certain scenes in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Thanks to modern climbing techniques, travellers can now summit the peak in just four hours, but it remains as formidable an undertaking as it did when it was first conquered back in 1946.
