Lake Minnewanka is a popular spot for couples eloping in Banff who prefer to stay close by. Just a 15-minute drive from the town of Banff, the lake provides beautiful views and ample space for a dreamy ceremony. However, due to it’s popularity, parking can be a challenge during peak tourist season, so be sure to plan extra time to find parking at the lake.
As the largest lake in Banff, spanning 21 kilometers in length, Lake Minnewanka offers an array of picturesque spots to explore. A mere 15-minute walk from the parking lot leads you to the beloved peninsula, renowned for its tranquility and panoramic views.
Boat rentals are available at the lake from mid-May to mid-October, providing the opportunity to explore the waters. Lake Minnewanka is the only lake in Banff where you can take a motorized boat, although rentals only allow you to venture about 1km down the lake.
For a truly unique and private experience, consider renting a fishing boat from Calgary and venturing further down the lake, as my husband and I did for our own elopement. We exchanged vows along the shore near one of the backcountry campsites, creating unforgettable memories in a secluded setting. Our guests will also never forget being transported to our ceremony spot on a little fishing boat.
For the more adventurous couples seeking a backcountry elopement experience, staying at one of the campsites around Lake Minnewanka offers the perfect opportunity, with the added bonus of access to my favourite hike, Aylmer Lookout, which offers breathtaking views of Lake Minnewanka from above.
