Whangamata Beach is one of the more well-known beaches in the Coromandel, but it's popular for many good reasons. Famous for its epic surf breaks, golden sand, and laid back atmosphere, during the summer months Whangamata is home to an influx of kiwis on holiday and tourists visiting New Zealand wanting a beach getaway.

Whangamata Beach also has close access to offshore islands including Whenuakura (Donut Island) which can be visited by kayak or paddleboard with local tour companies and guides.

Whenuakura and the Whangamata Islands are classified as Wildlife Sanctuaries and Taonga (sacred) and there are strict rules that must be followed when visiting or getting close to the islands. There is no fishing, no dogs, and you mustn't land on the island even though that little beach is very tempting! Your safest bet is to go with a guide and learn more about the history and the rules.

I found that Whangamata Beach is best to photograph at sunrise and golden hour in the morning. There is plenty of beach and sandy foreshore to choose from, but I really liked positioning the Whangamata Islands in my frame to give the image a focal point and contrast.
