The Augusto Arruda Pineapple Plantation is a unique site where pineapples are cultivated exclusively in greenhouses. This method allows for precise control over growing conditions, ensuring high-quality fruit. Visitors can explore the greenhouses and observe the entire cultivation process, from planting to harvest.
In the 19th century, São Miguel’s orange orchards suffered from disease, prompting farmers to seek alternative crops. Pineapples proved ideal due to the island’s mild climate and the feasibility of greenhouse cultivation. Dr. Augusto Arruda, a prominent figure in Azorean history, transformed his family’s orange grove into one of the first pineapple plantations on the island. His contributions extended beyond agriculture; he also played a significant role in developing tourism and founded SATA, the Azores’ regional airline.
Visiting the plantation offers an educational experience into this unique agricultural tradition. Guests can sample fresh pineapples and products like liqueurs and jams. The on-site shop provides authentic Azorean souvenirs and locally made goods. Exploring the Augusto Arruda Pineapple Plantation is a must for those interested in the island’s rich agricultural history and the distinctive flavor of Azorean pineapples.
