The Valley of Lombadas is a hidden gem in Ribeira Grande, offering stunning views and unique plant-covered walls along the rugged and narrow road leading down to the valley. At the bottom, you'll find a river flowing through the picturesque landscape, with beautiful walking trails waiting to be explored. Whether you're seeking adventure or simply looking for a peaceful escape in nature, the Valley of Lombadas promises an unforgettable experience filled with lush scenery and exciting exploration opportunities. So gear up, hit the road, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure in this idyllic corner of São Miguel!

If you decide to approach the Lombadas Waterfall via the trail, here is the GPS track you can use. But keep in mind: This is a difficult, unmarked trail. If you choose to hike it, do so at your own risk and understand the potential dangers.

Overview:

After reading several discouraging reviews on WikiLoc, I went to the Vale das Lombadas parking lot with no intention of hiking. However, after speaking with a local hiker, I decided to give it a try.

The route is short but challenging. Proceed with caution and ensure you have plenty of daylight. It took me about 40 minutes to reach the waterfall.

Trail Description:

From the parking lot, walk 400 meters along the road to a sharp bend where the trail begins. There’s a faint path, but you’ll encounter some obstacles, like a civil protection fence and a plank crossing a mountain crack—be cautious. There’s also a rope to help you descend a tricky spot.

Most of the trail is a steep, muddy descent with roots and rocks where you’ll need to use your hands for support. It’s not technically difficult, but it’s dangerous, so be careful.

The path is mostly visible, and I reached the waterfall in 40 minutes. The waterfall is stunning and well worth the effort.

On the way back:

Be aware of a confusing spot near a dry riverbed. You’ll see two paths—instinct tells you to keep climbing, but you need to cross the dry riverbed instead.

The trail can be slippery, and the GPS signal is weak, so trust your instincts. The difficulty is high due to the dangerous conditions, so approach this hike with care.
