Jardim Botânico António Borges is a lush, historic botanical garden in Ponta Delgada on São Miguel Island. Founded in the mid-19th century by António Borges, a local entrepreneur and politician with a passion for botany, the garden became his personal project to showcase exotic plants from around the world.
This garden is a true gem, with its romantic 19th-century design featuring winding paths, grottos, small bridges, and a unique variety of plants. You’ll come across rare and unusual species, making it a peaceful escape for nature lovers and anyone looking to enjoy the serene green scenery.
The garden itself may not be a destination you’d go out of your way to visit, but if you’re already in Ponta Delgada, it’s a lovely pocket of nature and tranquility. There’s even a cozy café where you can grab lunch—something that’s surprisingly hard to find in Ponta Delgada around midday—as well as a small lookout spot for kids. It’s a great option if you’re exploring the Azores with family and want a peaceful stop with some greenery to enjoy.
