Gornergrat is a mountainous ridge above Zermatt with stunning views of the Matterhorn, Gorner glacier and more than 20 four-thousand meter peaks. The Gornergrat area is our favorite place to hike and explore in Zermatt, particularly with kids.

It's easy to reach this viewpoint with the Gornergrat cogwheel mountain train, which drops you off at a panorama terrace next to a hotel and restaurant. Above the hotel, there is a higher observation deck and a short loop path, which allows you to enjoy more of the glacier view.

Later you can visit the lovely Riffelsee lake and optionally hike down the mountain with Matterhorn in view. See trail options.

We suggest planning at least 2 hours for this outing, more if you plan to hike or eat lunch on the mountain.

This railway is open year round and doesn't close in early October like other mountain transport in this area.
