The Plaza de los Ponchos, also known as the Centennial Market, in the Canton of Otavalo, Ecuador is known for its grand array of handmade textiles and traditional jewelry. Visitors will be delighted to find mantas, tapestries, hand embroidered blouses, purses, chompas, scarves, ponchos made of sheep's wool and alpaca, and various pieces of traditional jewelry. Artisans arrive at dawn with large sacks of merchandise which they transport to their individual booths, known as callambas. The Plaza de los Ponchos provides a unique shopping experience full of color and culture- immersing shoppers in the rich diversity of ethnic groups from all over the country who come together in celebration of indigenous tradition. Prices for items range from low to high, and visitors should remember to bring som extra cash- you never know what crafty item may stumble upon!
