Cotopaxi is an active stratovolcano located in Ecuador, 50 km south from Quito and 31 km northeast from Latacunga. It has the distinction of being one of the highest peaks in the world, reaching a height of 5,897 meters (19,347 feet). This sacred mountain is known to have erupted 87 times, and is currently in ongoing eruption since October 2022. Its first recorded eruption was in 1534 which created lahars (mudflows) around the volcano. Climbing Cotopaxi is a popular activity, with up to 100 climbers attempting it on weekends. With its spectacular glacier and beautiful views from the mountain top, summiting Cotopaxi can be an unforgettable experience, but it's currently off-limits due to its eruptive state.
