Locals would say, You haven't really gone to Chiang Mai unless you've been to Wat Phratat doi suthep.
Overlooking the city from its mountain throne, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is one of northern Thailand's most sacred temples, and its founding legend is learned by every school kid in Chiang Mai. The wat is a beautiful example of northern Thai architecture, reached via a 306-steps staircase flanked by naga (mythical sea serpents) or today you can take the cable car for 20 THB. As the most important temple in the region, it can be very crowded, so better to come early in the morning or during the golden hour before sunset. Take a look around, enjoy the magnificent view of Chiang Mai city and the many shrines and pagodas. There are many photography opportunities here with the golden umbrellas, pagodas, buddha statues, monks walking and praying around, and there are often events such as dancers or lion dancers.
