If you’ve heard of Dartmoor, then you’ve probably heard of Wistman’s Wood? This hike takes you to one of the most famous sights on the moors. Considered a moderately challenging trail of around 4.7 miles, this circular route will provide you with magical oak trees, moss-covered boulders, and rocky terrain. Imagine yourself immersed in a world of druids and ghosts as you explore this ancient woodland.

The hike starts from Two Bridges Hotel car park, cross the road and follow the signs and footpath to the woods. It’s very clearly marked!

The path leads you along the woods, and it’s important to note that there are now signs asking visitors to stick to the path and not enter the woods themselves. Due to heavy visitor traffic over previous years, the woodland is being damaged and it’s incredibly important we allow it the space to breathe and grow.

As you follow the path with the trees on your left and Longaford Tor on your right in the distance, head left towards the stoned wall and the river. Just before you get to the small dam, cross the stoned wall next to a tall standing wooden pole. Follow the Devonport Leat southward through the moors until you reach Beardown Farm. Take the track with the farm on your left, cross a metal gate (the path is signposted) and follow the path down until you reach an old bridge. There is a signpost where you take the left and into the woods. Continue walking with the river on your left, past the stiles, until you reach the B3357. Follow the main road back to the car park.

Please be cautious that this route is incredibly boggy in the winter or following heavy rainfall so do ensure you have the correct footwear.
