Raufarholshellir is a thrilling lava tube cave located just 30 minutes from Reykjavik, boasting impressive dimensions and fascinating geological features. It offers an exciting opportunity to explore the colorful rock formations and unique textures created by ancient volcanic activity. With easy accessibility and guided tours available, adventurers can embark on an unforgettable underground journey through this natural wonder. Don't miss the chance to delve into the depths of Raufarholshellir and witness the enchanting world hidden beneath Iceland's surface! The Lava Tunnel is an exciting experience for everyone who wants to take a glimpse inside a volcano. The Lava Tunnel is located between Reykjavík and Selfoss and was created by the lava flow due to an eruption over 5000 years ago.

You can choose between two tours. A shorter version which takes one hour and leads along made paths (minimum age 3 years), and a longer tour (minimum age 12 years) which leads further into the tunnel and the path is not flattened in the back of the cave but the original stone which makes it more difficult to walk the path. I personally would describe the shorter tour as easy but you need to be able to walk stairs into the mountain. The longer tour is for people in good physical condition as the path can be challenging to walk.

You get a helmet with a flashlight. For the longer tour you also get gloves. The temperature inside the tunnel is always around 4 degrees Celsius all around the year. Therefore, I recommend warm cloths and good shoes. For the longer tours hiking shoes with ankle support are required. I would also recommend shoes like this for the shorter tour if possible.
