The medieval village of Monsaraz, in Alentejo, in Southern Portugal, is surrounded by a wall and guarded by an imposing castle, which overlooks the border with Spain, on the banks of the Guadiana river, dammed by the Alqueva Dam. From the Castle of Monsaraz, it is possible to have a panoramic view of the golden fields of the Alentejo plains, full olive trees and cork oaks (known as "chaparros", in Portuguese).

Monsaraz has a rich history, characterized by military victories, conquests and reconquests, as well as the protection of Portuguese borders against the then kingdom of Castile. With a strategic position, over time, the Castle of Monsaraz had a historical function protecting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Portugal. This 13th century building is not only very beautiful, but also impeccably preserved! You can really feel a Middle Ages atmosphere around here.

One must not confound Monsaraz with Reguengos de Monsaraz though! These are two different places... Be aware of that while setting up your GPS.
