Tucked away from Port Alberni, Wiener Falls is a little-known gem offering a great mix of adventure and scenic beauty. This spot is perfect for photographers, especially during the wet season from late fall to early summer when the waterfall is at its best.
Getting there involves a short but adventurous hike, scrambling, and rope-assisted descent down a steep embankment. The trail can get incredibly slippery in winter, so bringing crampons or traction spikes for your shoes is a smart move. The 3.7-km out-and-back trail is considered moderately challenging, and while it’s a popular hike, you can still find quiet moments, especially early in the morning or later in the day.
How to Get There
Access is relatively straightforward from a decommissioned logging road across from Sproat Lake Landing. Follow the old power line cut-through until the trail branches off—watch for the orange blazes marking the way. The initial section is uphill but not overly steep, though parts of the trail can be technical.
Look for the small trail entrance on the left (again marked with orange blazes). From there, you have two choices:
Take the right-hand pink-marked trail to reach the top of the falls.
Take the left-hand orange-marked trail for a steep rope-assisted descent down to the base of the falls, where you’ll find refreshingly cold water and the best photo opportunities.
Wiener Falls is well worth the trip if you’re looking for a short but rewarding adventure. Just be prepared for some scrambling, and bring the right gear to navigate the terrain safely!
