Imagine tackling a 15.1-km out-and-back trail near Gold River, BC—one of Vancouver Island's most exhilarating adventures. This trail is a favourite for backpackers, campers, and serious hikers, yet if you pick the right time of day, you can enjoy a rare moment of solitude amid the challenge. The ideal season to experience this route is from June through October. And just a quick note: you'll have to leave your dog at home, as pets aren't allowed on this trail.

The journey begins by turning off at the Elk River bridge and following a logging road until you spot a caution sign—the trailhead awaits you there. Though well-marked, this hike is no walk in the park. With steep grades and tricky loose-rock sections that slow your pace on the climb and the descent, every step is a workout. And be prepared for spotty cell reception, so download your map before you head out.

King's Peak isn't just another hike—it's hands down one of the most breathtaking challenges on the island. Clocking in at a gruelling 1,800 meters of elevation gain, this isn't a stroll for the faint-hearted. But trust me, when you reach the summit, every drop of sweat will be worth it.

From the top, prepare to be blown away by the panoramic views: you'll see the impressive Elkhorn Peak, Vancouver Island's third-highest mountain, alongside Mt. Colonel Foster, with the vast, wild expanse of Strathcona Park unfolding before you. For an unforgettable experience, consider camping just below the summit. There's nothing quite like waking up to a sunrise that lights up the rugged landscape or watching the sunset cast its golden glow over the peaks.

Don't forget to bring plenty of water, especially in late summer when the streams and tarns might run dry. And while you might spot a few lingering snow puddles near the top, it's best not to rely on them. This is serious, rugged terrain, so be ready for anything.

King's Peak is undeniably challenging, but if you're up for it, the rewards are spectacular.
