Located just a short walk from Iseshi Station, Toyouke Daijingu, also known as Ise Jingu Geku (Outer Shrine), is one of the two main shrines in Ise City. It enshrines Toyouke Omikami, the deity of food, housing, and clothing, making it an essential stop before visiting the Inner Shrine (Naiku), which is a few kilometers away.

  • Open: 5:00 AM – 6:00 PM (May–Aug) / 5:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Sep–Apr)

  • Admission: Free

  • Best Time to Visit: Early morning for a peaceful atmosphere, or late afternoon for soft sunlight filtering through the trees.

What to See & Do

  • Main Sanctuary: Built in traditional Japanese style, similar to Naiku, with elegant wooden architecture.

  • Sengukan Museum: Learn about the Shikinen Sengu, the shrine’s rebuilding ritual that takes place every 20 years.

  • Sacred Forest Walks: Stroll through the serene grounds surrounded by towering ancient trees.

  • Kazenomiya Shrine: A smaller but historically significant shrine within Geku’s grounds.

Seasonal Events & Festivals

  • New Year’s Visits (Jan 1–3): One of Japan’s most popular hatsumode (first shrine visits), drawing thousands of worshippers.

  • Kagura Performances (Throughout the Year): Traditional dance and music ceremonies offered to the deity.

  • Shikinen Sengu (Every 20 Years – Last in 2013, Next in 2033): A grand rebuilding of the shrine structures, an 1,300-year-old tradition.
