Trailhead: Mt. Tomamu Ropeway Station
Mount Tomamu is a hidden gem in Hokkaido, offering a unique hiking experience that is only available in the early morning between 5:00 AM and 8:00 AM. The trailhead begins at the Tomamu Ropeway Station, managed by Hoshino Resorts. You have to take the ropeway which takes you up to the start of the trail, which makes the hike accessible and convenient.
The hike to the summit of Mt. Tomamu is relatively short, taking about 1 hour. The trail is steep but well-maintained. One of the highlights of this hike is the breathtaking "sea of clouds" that often blankets the surrounding valleys, creating a stunning view that’s worth the early wake-up call.
At the lower part of the hike, there's a beautiful terrace, perfect for taking a break and soaking in the views. Despite the trail's accessibility, 99% of tourists tend to stay at the terrace, leaving the summit relatively empty. For those who do make the extra effort to reach the top, the panoramic views are absolutely rewarding.
