Trailhead: Fukiage Onsen

Trail Map: Hokkaido Wilds - Furano-dake Loop Hike

Accessibility:

  • By Car: Parking is available at Fukiage Onsen, which serves as the trailhead for the Mt. Furano hike. The parking area is relatively spacious, but it's still a good idea to arrive early, especially on weekends.

  • By Public Transport: Public transport options are limited. The closest public bus stop is at Kamifurano, but from there, you'll need to take a taxi to Fukiage Onsen, the trailhead.

Accommodation:

  • Fukiage Onsen: This onsen area is an ideal place to stay if you're looking to start your hike early. The hot springs here are a perfect way to relax before or after your hike. There are a few ryokan and lodges around that cater to hikers.

General Information: Mount Furano, standing at 1,912 meters, is a prominent peak in the Tokachi Range of central Hokkaido. Known for its stunning alpine scenery and volcanic features, the mountain offers a challenging but rewarding hike. The Furano-dake Loop Hike is a popular route that takes you through a diverse landscape, including volcanic rock formations, alpine meadows, and lush forests.

The hike begins at Fukiage Onsen, where you can enjoy a soak in natural hot springs before or after your adventure. The trail quickly ascends, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. Along the way, you'll encounter sulfur vents, adding a unique aspect to the hike. The trail is well-marked but can be steep and rocky, requiring good physical condition and proper gear.

The loop hike typically takes about 5-6 hours to complete, with the summit offering panoramic views of the Daisetsuzan mountain range, including the nearby peaks of Mt. Tokachi and Mt. Biei. The descent brings you back to Fukiage Onsen, where a relaxing soak awaits.

Best Time to Hike: The hiking season for Mt. Furano is generally from late June to early October, with July and August offering the best conditions. The trail can be snow-covered in the early and late parts of the season, so hikers should be prepared for varying conditions.

Additional Notes:

  • The hike can be quite strenuous, particularly the ascent, which involves some steep and rocky sections. It's not recommended for beginners.

  • The area around Fukiage Onsen is known for bear sightings, so be sure to carry bear spray and make noise while hiking.

  • After your hike, take some time to relax in the onsen and enjoy the serene natural surroundings.
