The Acropolis of Athens is an iconic ancient citadel that stands atop a rocky hill overlooking the city.
It contains some of the most important and impressive archaeological remains of the Ancient Greek world, including structures such as the Parthenon, Propylaea, Erechtheion, and Temple of Athena Nike. This ancient landmark was first inhabited as early as the fourth millennium BC, however it was Pericles in the fifth century BC who coordinated the construction of these historically significant architectural feats.
The Acropolis was tragically damaged during the 1687 siege by the Venetians during the Morean War when gunpowder stored within its walls exploded. Although much of its splendor has been lost over the centuries, the Acropolis of Athens still stands as a towering monument to Greece's rich history and culture.
