Matera, in Basilicata's Italy, is believed to be the world's oldest human settlement! It is composed of two parts; the Sasso Barisano and the Sasso Caveoso which are divided by a ridge crowned by the city's stunning duomo (cathedral).

With its distinct tufa limestone caves, Matera is a truly remarkable place for those looking for a journey into the past. There is plenty to explore from the Palombaro Lungo, a giant cistern, to the Cripta del Peccato Originale featuring 8th-century frescoes. Lastly, the Museo della Scultura Contemporanea and the Museo Nazionale d'Arte Medievale e Moderna della Basilicata are fantastic locations to browse works of modern and ancient art. Not only will your eyes find pleasure in the beauty of these attractions but your tastebuds too with the delicious local cuisine on offer. Matera has truly risen like a phoenix, so come and experience this wonderful region and soak up the history and culture!
