Wat Rong Khun, perhaps better known to foreigners as the White Temple, is a privately owned art exhibit in the style of a Buddhist temple in Chiang Rai Province. It is owned by Chalermchai Kositpipat, who designed, constructed, and opened it to visitors in 1997. When completed (not before 2070), the white temple compound will have nine buildings, including the existing ubosot, a hall of relics, a meditation hall, an art gallery, and living quarters for monks. To date, Chalermchai has spent THB 1,080 million ($30M) on the project with his own money! In term of photography, it's a photographer's paradise! You can start with the gates of hell and continue to the main white building, and continue to the other gold buildings behind. Don't forget to check the super heroes mural inside the temple or visit the super design bathrooms outside the main building, and other sculptures, fountains and robots statues. You can easily spend 2-3 hours there and there are many shops and restaurants around the area. For a hotel nearby if you want to shoot sunrise / sunset, I recommend Doowall Hotel.
