Koh Tao is much laid back than his neighbours Samui and Phangan. Restaurants, nightspots and dive shops cluster in Mae Haad Beach and near Sai Ree Beach. Villas dot palm-fringed beaches such as Chalok Baan Kao Bay, on the south coast. In the northwest, Koh Nang Yuan is a group of islets with hilltop views. Koh Tao is known for its diving spots with tropical coral reefs, with species including whale sharks and rays. Hawksbill and green turtles gather here to breed. It's the best spot in Thailand if you want to learn how to dive and pass your PADI course. In term of photography, this is pretty much beaches, aerial views, and underwater photography. Here are some of my favorite spots:

  • Koh Nang Yuan of course. This tiny island is the most visited spot around Koh Tao, especially for his beautiful viewpoint. The problem here will be the crowd, so either go there very early.

before 9-10AM, or go there after 5PM. Also if you go high season (nov to march), expect a lot of people. It costs 200 THB to go there.

  • Sai Nuan beach is the perfect postcard: white sand, palm trees, very nice from drone too.

  • Freedom beach, Mango bay, Shark bay, Je Ta Kang and Aow Leuk are the most beautiful beaches around.

  • For the sunset, Mango bay and June Juea Bay are the spots to be.

  • John Suwan viewpoint is a good viewpoint (20-minute hike) for sunrise or panoramic view. Good from drone too.

  • Nightlife is around Sai Ree Beach where you have fire shows around 9 pm. For bars &restaurants I recommend Whitening, The Gallery, AC Bar &Beach Club, Fizz Beach lounge and Zyco Bar.
