The tanners use natural plant dyes such as henna for orange, poppy flowers for red, saffron for yellow, mint for green, cedarwood for brown, and indigo for blue. They also work with pomegranate powder to create yellow if saffron is too expensive. Each vessel contains its own natural dye which is hand-applied or occasionally kneaded into the hides with their feet. The hides are then hung up to dry in the sun before being sold to local craftsman and turned into various leather products. Tourists can explore the Chouara Tannery and see the whole process from nearby shop terraces or guided tours. Despite the pungent smell, the Fes Tannery is an incredible place to witness a time-honored tradition and view luxurious handmade leather products.
