To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of desert landscapes, but as this peninsula contrasts so significantly with the rest of Madeira, I couldn’t resist visiting it.
I set out on this incredible hike in the late afternoon, and it was absolutely the right choice - hardly anyone around. Most hikers usually start their journey at sunrise and finish by lunch. My advice - do as I did. In the evening, it’s nearly deserted, and you’ll return under the soft golden glow of the sunset. 🌄
Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço offers a picturesque 3 kilometer journey (6 kilometers round trip) along the eastern tip of Madeira Island. Enjoy views of both the north and south sides of the island, as you take an easy hike across its semi-arid landscape. This place is home to diverse wildlife and plant species, including protected seabirds and monk seals. Then cool off with a refreshing swim at Cais do Sardinha afterwards. It's the perfect way to enjoy nature and have a good time!
