Limmerensee (or Limmernsee) is a stunning reservoir in the Canton of Glarus located between the peaks of Muttenchopf (2482m), Selbsanft (2950m) and Kistenstöckli (2746m). No wonder the spot became famous thanks to the Social Media - photos and videos of people standing at the Muttenchopf viewpoint and looking down on to Limmernsee. This one will require some hiking effort. Although the hike one way is not so long, you need to hike up around 650m. On the top, there is a hut (Mutseehütte) where you can make a reservation upfront if you would like to stay for the night (highly recommended - link attached - the estimated price is not including accomodation). If not, the loop will be around 12.5km long. How to get there?
you need to go to Linthal where the journey starts - there is a parking place just next to the cable car station Tierfehd – Kalktrittli. The easiest way is to get there by car. It is possible also with public transport, but you would need to go to Linthal bus stop and then walk around 6.5km to the cable car station.
take the cable car Tierfehd – Kalktrittli (Luftseilbahn). There is nobody at the cable car station, it is self-service. To prevent you from standing infront of a closed cabin check the operating hours beforehand.
Take a 3km tunnel (not the most beautiful part of the hike)
You will arrive just next to the lake. Then you can start your hike up either to Mutseehütte or straight to the viewpoint: Muttenchopf. There is another stunning viewpoint requiring another 1h30min hike from Mutseehütte - to Kistenpasshütte (it will be also available on the map).
