The best way to immerse yourself in the Bhutanese culture is by attending ceremonies and engaging with the locals. You can easily do so at Memorial Chorten in Thimphu.

Participate in making and lighting butter lamps followed by a prayer ceremony with many locals chanting, and in general be open to where you are invited to partake in whatever activity of the day.

About the Memorial

The National Memorial Chorten, located in Thimphu, Bhutan, is a stupa built in 1974 to honor the third Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. Unlike traditional stupas, it does not contain human remains but instead features a photo of the king in ceremonial attire. The chorten's unique design and intricate architecture make it a prominent religious landmark in Bhutan, attracting many visitors who come to circumambulate the structure, spin prayer wheels, and offer prayers. During special occasions like the Monlam Prayer Festival, the chorten becomes a hub of religious activity, with the Je Khenpo addressing and blessing the gathered crowd.
