Clos to Hossa you can take a fascinating glimpse into Finland's prehistoric past. Dating back 3,500 - 4,500 years, the Värikallio Rock Paintings are ancient paintings with scenes of hunting and shamanic rituals on a rock wall by Lake Somerjärvi.

The small unique figures, including stick-like elk and human figures with triangle-shaped heads, offer a window into the beliefs and practices of early inhabitants.

In summer there is a nice hiking trail leading to the paintings, and an observation platform has been built in front of the cliffs. The walking bridge with a platform is made of steel so it's safe to walk to see the rock paintings quite closely.

From june until the end of september you can also hop on a boat and take a beautiful ride through Finland's largest canyon lake. The boat will take you within 30 minutes to the rock paintings. The nature surrounding the water is absolutely stunning. You can also opt for renting a canoe.

I especially liked doing the boat tour during the 'Ruska', which is the Finnish foliage period that start on the second half of september. The landscape during this time is simply mesmerizing. Just make sure to check if the boat still runs when you are visiting:
