Ice floating is one of those must-do experiences in Lapland. Floating in ice cold water in a rescue suit, hoping to spot the northern lights is a very unique thing to do. Safartica is the biggest company offering these kind of tours in Ylläs and they offer pick-ups from hotels and accommodations in the region.

To be honest, I was very biased before going on this tour, since I already went ice floating a couple of times before. I experienced it in a river at night (in Kuusamo), which was a very thrilling experience, and even tried it in a frozen sea, right behind Icebreaker Sampo in Kemi (which was one of the coolest things ever!).

So although I liked this experience with Safartica, for me personally, it felt a little bit underwhelming. They drive you to a cabin by the water, where you will need to change into a suit before you enter a small pond that they made into the thick ice. What I thought was very odd, is that they gave us the wet suits from the guests that were in the water before us.

In the end, I did like it though, because it was the first time that I saw the northern lights while floating in water. The other people in our group seemed to enjoyed it very much, so if it's your first time and you want to experience this in Ylläs, I would recommend ice floating with Safartica.
