Rippon Tor is a great tor to explore in Dartmoor, often overshadowed by its more famous neighbour, Haytor. The walk to reach the summit is easy but steep, but once you do get there, you'll be rewarded with stunning views and a sense of history. The tor is dotted with cairns, which were likely used as burial sites during the Bronze Age. There's also an unfinished medieval cross and the ruins of the Newhouse Inn, a pub that burned down in the 1800s. But perhaps the most intriguing feature is the Rippon Tor Rifle Range, a relic from World War II. Some find it impressive, others call it an eyesore, but either way, it's definitely worth exploring. Just be prepared for a muddy walk in winter!
Parking for this tour can be found at the Saddle Tor Car Park, or Hemsworthy Gate Car Park.
