Lago Federa: A Photographer's Paradise in the Dolomites

Starting Point and Hiking Details
The hike to Lago Federa begins at Ponte de Ru Curto, located along the scenic road to Passo Giau. It’s a moderate 2 hour hike (one way), leading you through lush forests and open meadows with increasingly breathtaking views. While there are some inclines, the trail is manageable for most hikers.

Autumn Magic
Visiting Lago Federa in autumn is an experience like no other. The larch trees surrounding the lake transform into vibrant golden hues, perfectly complementing the deep blue waters. This seasonal spectacle draws in nature enthusiasts and photographers alike, making it one of the most picturesque spots in the Dolomites during fall.

Sunrise Beauty
If you're a fan of golden hour photography, aim to arrive at sunrise. The first light of the day bathes the golden larches and the surrounding peaks in a warm glow, creating surreal reflections on the still water. Fair warning: This spot is popular with photographers, especially in autumn, so you might not have it entirely to yourself, even early in the morning. However, the beauty of the scene makes it absolutely worth it.

Rifugio Croda da Lago
Located just a short walk from the lake is the cozy Rifugio Croda da Lago. This mountain hut offers delicious meals, warm drinks, and a chance to rest or even stay overnight. Spending the night here is an excellent idea if you want to capture both sunrise and sunset without rushing back down the trail. You should book your overnight stay early if you plan to visit in autumn, as it tends to fill up quickly during this season.

Tips for Your Visit

  • Parking: Park at Ponte de Ru Curto. ... Keep in mind that if you’re not early, the parking lot can fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons. This might mean you’ll need to park further away since the spaces directly along the road are quite limited. So, plan accordingly to make the most of your visit!

  • Best Season: Autumn is ideal for the golden larch scenery.

  • Crowds: While it can get busy with photographers in the morning, the peaceful atmosphere and breathtaking views more than make up for it.

  • Gear: Bring a headlamp if you’re hiking in the dark and dress warmly for chilly mornings.

  • TIME: The photos here were taken on November 10th, which, in my opinion, was already a bit too late. Most of the larches had lost their needles by then, though the sunrise still created a magical atmosphere as the remaining trees were beautifully illuminated by the golden light. However, by this time, the mountain hut was already closed, and the lake had started to freeze.

I would recommend visiting at least two weeks earlier—sometime between mid to late October—to fully enjoy the vibrant autumn colors at their peak.

  • Camper Van: We stayed overnight directly at the parking lot (Park4Night) with our camper van, which allowed us to start the hike during the night and arrive at the lake just in time for sunrise. It was such a convenient way to experience the beauty of Lago Federa at its best.

Whether you're here for the photography, the serene beauty, or the adventure, Lago Federa is an unforgettable destination that deserves a spot on your Dolomite bucket list.
