The Lagazuoi Lake is one of those hidden gems in the Dolomites that doesn’t get as much attention as some of the more popular spots, which is exactly what makes it so special. I visited here for sunset, and I practically had the whole place to myself—no crowds, just pure tranquility. The lake, surrounded by towering peaks, offers some of the most peaceful and stunning views.

Getting There

To reach the lake, you'll start your hike from the Plan dall Ega parking lot. The hike isn’t too long, but there are some steep sections that can make it feel more challenging. On average, the hike takes around 1.5 to 2 hours. The route is not overly difficult but definitely requires some effort, especially as you near the top.

Scotoni Hut

Around halfway up, you’ll pass the Scotoni Hut , a great spot for a short break. It’s perfect for a little rest, and you can enjoy some refreshments before continuing the climb. The hut is cozy and offers a chance to refuel.

Sunset and Swimming

We arrived at Lagazuoi Lake in the afternoon, and a few people were there, swimming and cooling off in the water. However, it was still a very peaceful and quiet spot with hardly anyone around. By sunset, only three people remained—just us and a couple who were camping by the lake. They were enjoying the sunset from their tent, and Elena and I took the opportunity to snap a few more photos. The light during golden hour was stunning, with beautiful reflections on the water and a serene atmosphere that made the experience feel even more special.

Parking and Return

The parking at the base (Parking Plan dall Ega) costs around €10 for the day, which isn't cheap. If you'd prefer to park for free you can leave your car further away on the main road at Parking Sare and walk about 1.6 km to the starting point.

After sunset, the descent can get a bit tricky, especially if you’re walking in the dark, so make sure to bring a headlamp—it’s essential for the return journey!

If you’re looking for a less crowded, beautiful spot to enjoy the mountains and the lake, Lagazuoi is a perfect choice. You’ll be rewarded with amazing views, quiet moments, and the kind of natural beauty that makes the Dolomites so special.
