Sorapis Lake – A Stunning Gem in the Dolomites
The Sorapis Lake, located in the Dolomites, is one of the most breathtaking spots I’ve visited, especially during sunset when the sky reflects beautifully on the turquoise waters. I’ve been there before, and it’s still one of my favorite places to explore – but I’ll share a few things you should know before you go!
Starting Point: The journey begins at the Passo Tre Croci parking area.
Duration: The hike to Sorapis Lake typically takes between 2 to 3 hours (one way), depending on your pace. The elevation gain is approximately 400 meters. While the trail is generally well-marked, certain sections can be narrow and exposed, so it's advisable to exercise caution, especially if you have a fear of heights.
Here you can find the shortest route to the lake
Sorapis Lake is famous for its incredibly vibrant, turquoise waters that are framed by jagged peaks. It feels almost surreal when you first see it, and it’s an amazing spot for photographers, especially. The lake’s unique color comes from minerals in the water, and it’s a stunning sight that’s truly unforgettable.
The images I took there were from quite a few years ago, back when swimming in the lake was still allowed. However, swimming is now prohibited due to environmental protection measures, so keep that in mind if you're planning a visit. But even if you can’t dip your toes in the water, the views alone are worth the hike.
Not far from the lake, there is a mountain hut (Rifugio Alfonso Vandelli) where you can grab a snack or something to drink. However, I wouldn’t say it’s anything extraordinary. When we visited, we were hoping for a proper meal, but all they had was a cheese sandwich that wasn’t particularly fresh. So, if you’re planning on hiking here, I’d highly recommend packing a picnic to make sure you have something satisfying for the trek. It’s also a good idea to bring enough water, as the hike can be demanding, especially in the summer heat.
If you’re interested in staying near the lake, the mountain hut offers super basic accommodations with bunk beds for those looking to spend the night in the mountains. But be aware, this is more of a simple and rustic experience, so don’t expect luxury. You can check here the prices and make a reservation via. mail or call them.
These days, the hike to Sorapis Lake has become incredibly popular and is one of the most frequented routes in the Dolomites. Because of this, it can get quite crowded, especially during the summer months and around midday. To avoid the largest crowds, I’d recommend starting your hike early in the morning or later in the afternoon, for the best chance of enjoying the lake in a more peaceful setting.
Parking is available at thePasso Tre Croci area, but be prepared for it to fill up quickly, especially during peak tourist seasons. It’s a small lot, so arriving early is a good idea if you want to secure a spot.
While the Sorapis Lake is undeniably beautiful, keep in mind that it’s become much more crowded over the years. I visited several years ago when it was a little quieter, but even then, I noticed it wasn’t the most peaceful spot, as many tourists now flock to the lake. That said, it’s still worth the effort for the stunning scenery.

Sorapis Lake is definitely one of the most beautiful spots in the Dolomites, but as it becomes more popular, you’ll need to plan carefully. The hike is worth it for the views, but be prepared for it to be a bit busy, especially in peak tourist season.
