Shitennoji Temple, one of Japan's oldest temples, was founded in 593 by Prince Shotoku and is the first temple built by the state. Despite several fires over the centuries, the buildings were always faithfully reconstructed to maintain their original 6th-century design. Visitors can explore the outer grounds for free or pay admission to see the inner precinct, Gokuraku-jodo Garden, and the treasure house with valuable temple artifacts. Don't miss the five-storied pagoda and Main Hall where Prince Shotoku is enshrined as a statue of Kannon.
