The Waimangu Geyser, located near Rotorua in New Zealand, was an amazing natural phenomenon and formerly one of the most powerful geysers in the world. Tourists flocked to the site to witness the dramatic eruptions which reached heights of up to 1,500 feet (460 m). The beautiful Waimangu Valley, with its blackened waters, became a major tourist attraction and visitors were able to view the geyser regularly due to it’s cycle of roughly 36 hours between each eruption. However, certain tragedy struck when four people ventured too close to the edge and were swept away by a sudden eruption. Unfortunately, the spectacle ceased after 1908, but the Waimangu Volcanic Rift Valley still remains today as a reminder of its incredible power.
