Dentro da Igreja de São Francisco, há um local que você não pode deixar de conhecer: a famosa Capela dos Ossos. A construção da igreja ocorreu nos séculos XV e XVI, mesclando os estilos maneirista e renascentista. Ela tem um histórico importante, inclusive sendo palco do casamento real entre o príncipe D. Afonso e D. Isabel de Castela, em 1490.

Capela dos Ossos

A Capela dos Ossos, erguida no século XVII, tem um propósito bem profundo: convidar a reflexão sobre a finitude da vida humana e o compromisso com a vivência cristã. Seus paredes e pilares são cobertos por milhares de ossos e crânios, provenientes dos monges que viveram no convento. Na entrada, uma inscrição expressa: "Nós ossos que aqui estamos, por vós esperamos". A mensagem é clara, convidando-nos a ponderar sobre nossa própria mortalidade. Pelo menos para nós essa capela cumpriu sua missão. Saimos mais reflexivos após a visita.

E tem mais: a visita inclui um Núcleo Museológico e uma Coleção de Presépios de diferentes partes do mundo. É um verdadeiro pacote de aprendizado e contemplação. 🇺🇸 Church of São Francisco Inside the Church of São Francisco lies Évora's most visited site: the Chapel of Bones. The construction of the Church of São Francisco was built upon a Gothic foundation, with its beginnings in the 15th and 16th centuries, showcasing influences from the Manueline-Mudejar and Renaissance styles. In times past, this church was recognized as a Royal Church and hosted the wedding of Prince D. Afonso with D. Isabel of Castile in 1490.

Chapel of Bones Built in the 17th century, the Chapel of Bones serves the purpose of prompting reflection on the transience of human life and the consequent commitment to a perpetual Christian existence. Walls and pillars are adorned with thousands of bones and skulls from the monks who once inhabited the convent. An inscription at the entrance of the chapel proclaims, "We bones that are here await yours." The space aims to be the ultimate destination for all mortal beings, aspiring to stimulate introspective contemplation. The chapel successfully accomplishes this objective, leaving us immersed in contemplation after the visit. The visit also includes the Museological Nucleus and the Nativity Scene Collection from different parts of the world.
