The Bernina Express is known as one of the most scenic train journeys in the world, connecting the Swiss towns of Chur and St. Moritz to the Italian town of Tirano. This panoramic train ride spans approximately 144 kilometers and takes about 4 to 4.5 hours, depending if you start in St. Moritz or in Chur. It passes through beautiful landscapes that include glaciers, alpine lakes, and charming villages. Along the way, you’ll travel through 55 tunnels and cross 196 bridges, including the notable Brusio Spiral Viaduct.
The journey features views of highlights such as the Morteratsch Glacier, the tranquil Lago Bianco, and the picturesque Montebello Curve, where you can appreciate the Bernina massif. The train has large panoramic windows that enhance your experience, allowing you to take in the scenery comfortably.
Onboard, you can enjoy light snacks and beverages from the minibar, but keep in mind that there is no dining car. The train does not stop for lunch; instead, you will have time to explore Tirano upon arrival.
Seraina’s Tip: Seat reservations are compulsory for the Bernina Express panoramic trains, so be sure to book in advance. If the panoramic trains are fully booked, regular trains run every hour on this route and do not require a reservation. They also provide lovely views of the landscape, making them a good alternative.
