Carrickfergus Castle is a Norman castle located in the town of Carrickfergus in County Antrim, on the northern shore of Belfast Lough, 25mins from Belfast Castle! It is arguably one of the best Castles in Northern Ireland!

It has an exciting history, including being sacked by King John and captured by French forces in 1778 under the command of Francois Thurot. The castle continued to be used for various purposes throughout the centuries and still stands today as a preserved historic monument with many exhibits to show what life was like in medieval times.

The castle is laid out to captivate imagination. The scene is set from the outside with models looking out the windows or keeping guard. You can explore the banqueting hall which has been faithfully restored or view cannons positioned around the castle's perimeter which protected it from invaders.

📸 On a clear day, the views from Carrickfergus Castle are exceptional. It’s definitely worth bringing your camera!

Guided tours are available to pre-book, or you can use the information boards to explore the castle at your own leisure. Information booklets and maps are available at the Visitor Centre. This is a great spot to pick up some souvenirs!

I think the best part of the castle tour is the immersive 3D experience. Using an App, you can point it at a cannon and watch as it fires on a vessel out at sea. In the Keep, you can point the app, and the bricks crumble away, revealing life during various periods of the castle’s history. It’s so cool!

🎬It was recently the filming location for the 2023 movie Dungeons & Dragons : Honour Amongst Thieves.
