Hike
2-3h
I make it a tradition to hike this mountain every year because of its sacred atmosphere, fascinating monuments, and deep folklore "Kintaro", as well as its ties to popular anime like Gintama and Evangelion. Linked to the legendary folk hero Kintaro, the trail from Kintoki Shrine leads through a peaceful forested path and rewards hikers with panoramic views of Mt. Fuji and the surrounding landscapes.

General Information & Summary:
Starting from Kintoki Shrine, the hike to Mt. Ashigara follows a gradual ascent through dense forest. The trailhead includes historical sites connected to Kintaro folklore, adding a cultural touch to the journey. The path continues through wooded areas, eventually opening up to reveal breathtaking views of Mt. Fuji and the surrounding valleys.
Near the summit, you’ll encounter views of Hakone and Sagami Bay, and on clear days, you can catch sight of Enoshima Island. The summit area features a small rest spot with benches and a stone marker dedicated to Kintaro. This hike is especially popular during the autumn for the beautiful foliage, though it’s a rewarding hike year-round.
Once at the top, take in the panoramic views before descending back along the same route to Kintoki Shrine. This hike is a favorite among locals, thanks to its accessibility, cultural significance, and fantastic views of Mt. Fuji.
