Sightseeing
There's a lot of things you can do around the lake. Below are some options in order of my personal preference:
Hakone Ropeway Amazing view of Mt. Fuji and the lake while you ride it. It connects the lake area to the Owakudani volcanic valley, giving you sweeping views of Ashinoko and beyond. It’s particularly amazing in the fall when the leaves change color, but honestly, it’s a sight to behold any time of year.
Cycling You can rent a bike at Hakone-en for 500 yen per hour located right next to the ropeway station.
Swan Boats I’m a huge fan of the swan boats at Ashinoko becuase of the sheer size of the lake. It's great for dates or with friends.
Lakeside Shops One of my favorite parts of visiting Ashinoko is browsing through the shops along the lakeside. I especially love grabbing soft-serve ice cream or pizza by the lake.
Sightseeing Cruise The pirate ship cruises are another classic Ashinoko experience but it's quite touristy.
Relax in an Onsen After a day of sightseeing, nothing beats soaking in a hot spring. Hakone has some great onsen spots with views of the lake or mountains. I always find it the perfect way to wind down after a busy day of exploring.
