Spring to Autumn (April to November): The Zao Echo Line road allows easy access during these months, offering clear views of the crater. The area is ideal for hiking, sightseeing, and enjoying the dynamic natural scenery.
Winter Season: The crater area is closed to vehicles in winter due to heavy snowfall, but nearby Zao Onsen becomes a winter wonderland, known for its hot springs and the famous “Snow Monsters” (frost-covered trees) that attract visitors to Mount Zao’s ski slopes.
Getting There
By Car: Drive along the Zao Echo Line (a toll road) to access the observation point near Okama Crater.
By Public Transport: It is best to take the Zao Ropeway then do a 45-minute hike to the crater.
