Grayson Highlands State Park is a true gem of the Southeast where you can see wild ponies and long horn cattle.
There are many trail options for this which can be found here: https://www.alltrails.com/parks/us/virginia/grayson-highlands-state-park
This is a dog-friendly hike but dogs should ALWAYS remain on leash as the long horn cattle are often suspicious of dogs (my theory is that they think they are coyotes).
PLEASE do not pet or feed the ponies. They are wild and should remain so.
The best part about this location is that there are many many areas for back country camping. You need a permit for this and will park in a special lot for the backpacking. Information on permits can be found here: https://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/blog/parking-for-overnight-backpacking-at-grayson-highlands#:~:text=Reservations%20are%20made%20the%20same,a%20campsite%20within%20the%20park.
